Organic farmers in Silicon Valley

31 08 2007

Blogging about farmers’ markets got me thinking of getting produce direct from the source in Silicon Valley – ie organic farms. There are several around in the South and East Bay, which basically will deliver a weekly supply of fresh fruit and veggies to your door. The contents will vary from week to week but it gives you the opportunity to eat plenty of veggies, some of which you know, and some you don’t! Check out this one in Gilroy at www.twosmallfarms.com as an example.

Flea Markets in Silicon Valley

23 08 2007

I know there are flea markets everywhere – when I lived in Paris, they were one of my favorite things to do at the weekend and I managed to squeeze one in on my recent trip to Las Vegas!  Anyway, there are a couple of great ones in Silicon Valley that you may not be familiar with if you’ve recently moved here, or relocated from out of state or country.   The two I’m thinking of are the one at De Anza College and at Berryessa in east San Jose (a HUGE one!)

The Berryessa Flea Market is definitely worth a visit, just because there is such a variety of stalls, from furniture to purses, from carpets and rugs to paintings and jewelry.  You’ll need a whole day to walk around – it’s massive!  It’s open Wednesday through Sunday and has an excellent farmers’ market.

The De Anza College Flea Market is much smaller but therefore you don’t need quite so much time to get around, still plenty of variety.  It’s open the first Saturday of each month.  Stick it on your calendar!

Farmers’ Markets

Another great American phenomenon which I had only previously seen in France, are the farmers’ markets. Every weekend during most of the year, the towns in Silicon Valley – and maybe elsewhere too – have the greatest selection of fruits and vegetables, freshly picked, to choose from. There’s usually also foodie places where try out great tastes from different countries. Definitely worth a regular visit!
