English born and raised, I met an American in London, fell in love, got married and had 2 beautiful girls.
Always one to dream about a niche in the market that hasn’t been tapped and have the flexibility (and control) of working for myself, I started the first ever diaper laundry service in the UK – they were and still are about 10 years behind the environmental awareness trend of the US. Great idea (there were 20 such companies when I left in 95), very hard work, not too economical – how do you compete with Proctor and Gamble and Kimberly Clark, the disposable GIANTS – with 2 kids under 2 (images of bags of newly cleaned diapers piled high in every room in the house still torment me), lucky to sell up to big private company 3 years later.
Turned to teaching software programs in private homes, much more lucrative and less smelly. Got pregnant with 3rd (boy) at same time as we found we were moving across the water to California who was born 4 months after moving here. My husband is now back home close to where he grew up (Palo Alto) and me and the kids have been here 12 years- I think we’re staying!
Good friends, desirous of helping people move in and solve what may seem insurmountable problems at the time – providing information and tools to anyone who doesn’t know Silicon Valley. I’ve been there!
